Advanced Nonsurgical Therapies
We offer nonsurgical alternative treatments for certain conditions. These treatments are non-invasive and offer a chance at avoiding surgery.
Platelet Rich Plasma
One of the procedures we offer to try and avoid surgery is a platelet rich plasma injection, or PRP. This is performed in the office safely, under local anesthesia with minimum risk. We draw blood from the patient, place it in a centrifuge which concentrates the platelets. The platelets contain “growth factors’ which have an anti-inflammatory, healing effect. We inject your cells into the injured area, joint under ultrasound guidance. There is no guarantee that it will work but it does offer the chance to avoid surgery. Newer studies are promising and we are getting good outcomes, so far. Many college and professional athletes have opted for this treatment in recent years; especially baseball pitchers hoping to avoid the famous “Tommy John” surgery.
Stem Cell Therapy
Another nonsurgical option we offer at Morgan Kalman is stem cell therapy. Similar to PRP, stem cell therapy is based around the idea of boosting your body’s ability to heal itself. Specifically, we use stem cells for osteoarthritis of the shoulder, hip and knee to promote cartilage healing.
We harvest some stem cells from the back of the pelvic bone, concentrated the cells in a centrifuge and inject under ultrasound guidance to the area of need. We also use fat (adipose) as an additional stem cell source when needed. Introducing those cells will enhance/promote the local healing response, thus a chance of avoiding surgery but the added benefit of reducing joint pain. This is performed safely in our office under local anesthesia with minimum risk.
